Shri, born Shrikanth Sriram, is a British multi-instrumentalist and producer known for his innovative live performances that blend acoustic, electric, and electronic music with traditional Indian instruments. Shri was raised in a musically inclined family in Mumbai, India, where his father played the sitar, and his mother and sister played the Carnatic violin. He trained as a classical tabla player for fourteen years under Pandit Nikhil Ghosh. Seeking more musical freedom, Shri taught himself to play bass, guitar, and flute. His signature instrument is a handcrafted fretless bass guitar, uniquely designed for playing with a bow.
Shri began his career playing percussion with the Indian rock band Indus Creed and bass with the jazz group Azure Hades, with whom he recorded an album. Moving to London in the 1990s, he collaborated with prominent musicians such as Talvin Singh, Nitin Sawhney, and DJ Badmarsh, forming the duo Badmarsh & Shri. They released two albums, Dancing Drums (1998) and Signs (2001), under Outcaste Records.
In 1997, Shri released his first solo album, Drum the Bass, produced by Nitin Sawhney. His second solo album, East Rain, followed in 2005. Shri’s work extends to theatrical productions, having composed for Akademi’s Coming of Age dance project at London’s South Bank in 2001, the Builder’s Association/Motiroti co-production Alladeen in 2003, and Tamasha Theatre Company’s Strictly Dandia in 2005.
In 2007, Shri released the album Seven Steps, featuring the single “Just for a Minute.” In 2011, he produced and performed on the track “Quest,” collaborating with Viveick Rajagopalan and Embar Kannan. That year, Shri also launched the project ShriLektric and appeared in episode 5 of season 1 of The Dewarists.
In 2015, Shri released the album Just a Vibration, a collaboration with the Hammonds Saltaire Brass Band.
